How do Montana communities bring summer to life?

Montana summers are filled with rodeos, festivals, farmers' markets, concerts, community celebrations, and countless opportunities to gather with neighbors and friends. While these events may seem effortless, they are powered by something special: people who care deeply about the places they call home.
Behind many of Montana's thriving communities are local community foundations—organizations dedicated to building permanent charitable resources that support local priorities for generations to come. Whether investing in youth programs, community facilities, arts and culture, housing, recreation, or basic needs, these local foundations help turn generosity into lasting impact.
The results of that community investment can be remarkable. This year, the Columbus Community Foundation raised more than $168,000 in a single weekend. Those dollars will be reinvested directly into local nonprofits and community initiatives, helping strengthen Columbus today while creating opportunities for the future.
Across Montana, there are 74 local community foundations serving communities large and small, rural and urban. Each foundation reflects the unique character, values, and priorities of its hometown. Together, they form a powerful network of local leaders, volunteers, donors, and advocates who are committed to helping their communities thrive.
The Montana Community Foundation (MCF) is proud to support this work. Forty-six local community foundations hold endowments at MCF, providing access to investment management, technical assistance, training opportunities, grant incentives, and resources designed to help build long-term community assets.
This partnership allows local community foundations to focus on what they do best: understanding community needs and connecting local generosity with local solutions. Through MCF's support, affiliates have access to educational opportunities, peer learning, governance resources, fundraising tools, and matching incentives that help charitable dollars go even further.
The impact extends far beyond individual grants. Through these partnerships, more than $1 million in additional resources has flowed into Montana communities, supporting projects and programs from Libby to Ekalaka. Beyond the dollars, local community foundations gain access to a statewide network of people who share ideas, celebrate successes, and work together to strengthen Montana's future.
The next time you attend a summer festival, cheer at a local rodeo, visit a community park, or see neighbors come together for a good cause. Remember that community doesn't happen by accident. It happens because people invest their time, talents, and resources into creating a stronger future.
