Make the Most of Your Year-End Giving

November 18, 2025

Each year, I am humbled by the generosity of Montanans who care deeply about others. Through their giving, they are feeding families, providing safe spaces for children, protecting our sacred lands, rivers, and wildlife, and enriching our communities through the arts. Thoughtful giving not only strengthens Montana, it creates a legacy for the causes donors care about, all while helping them meet their financial goals.

At the Montana Community Foundation (MCF), we’re honored to be a trusted partner in that journey. Inspired by what he has seen in his own community, Scott Derenburger made his first Montana Endowment Tax Credit (METC)-qualifying gift to benefit the Missoula Food Bank. As he shared, “Over the last year, I’ve started volunteering at the Missoula Food Bank. I’ve seen firsthand the food struggles families in our community face, and I wanted to do something that could really help in a way that lasts.”

The process, Scott noted, was straightforward. “MCF made it easy. With the METC, I was able to support families in need and create a lasting legacy all while receiving valuable tax benefits. And by using long-term appreciated stock, I also gained the added advantage of avoiding capital gains tax.”

MCF’s team of Gift and Estate Planning experts across the state can help you explore your options and take full advantage of the METC. Individuals and couples can earn a 40% tax credit toward their Montana tax liability, up to $15,000 per taxpayer per year. Businesses can also make a direct gift to a qualified endowment and receive a 20% METC, with a maximum allowable credit of $15,000.

This season, as you consider your year-end giving, know that your gift can make a real and lasting difference in Montana. The Montana Endowment Tax Credit makes it easier than ever to give thoughtfully and strategically. Like Scott, you can create a legacy that reflects your values, strengthens your community, and provides meaningful impact for years to come. Our team at MCF is here to guide you every step of the way—helping you shape Montana’s future through giving.
