Let’s Talk About Why a Will Matters
It’s staggering: more than 70% of Montanans don’t have a will. That means the state decides how their assets are distributed—often leading to confusion, delays, and added stress for loved ones. The truth is, the one thing we all have in common is this: each of us will die. It’s inevitable.
Creating a will isn’t about how much you have. Whether your estate is modest or substantial, a will ensures your wishes are honored and your loved ones are protected. It’s something every adult should have on their to-do list.
I’m incredibly grateful that my dad sat me down three years ago to walk through his estate plan. He explained why he appointed me his Power of Attorney for medical and financial decisions—never imagining I’d have to step into that role after his stroke. His planning made all the difference. It gave me clarity and helped me honor his wishes without hesitation.
When he passed away, it also prompted me to take a closer look at our own estate plan. I found five critical areas that needed attention and updating.
If you’ve already created your will, take time this month to review and update it. If you haven’t, now is the perfect time to begin. Ask a trusted friend or family member to help keep you accountable, and make an appointment with an estate planning professional. You may be surprised at how straightforward—and affordable—the process can be.
A will isn’t just a legal document. It’s a chance to leave a legacy. My dad was passionate about supporting kids through Toys for Tots and Big Brothers Big Sisters, and he was a fierce advocate for Montana veterans. Carrying out his legacy has become one of the most meaningful roles I’ve had.
As you consider your legacy, we invite you to think about how your values can live on through giving. Partnering with the Montana Community Foundation is a simple and lasting way to support the causes you care about, long after you're gone. Whether it's education, the arts, the environment, or your community, your planned gift can shape Montana’s future.
Whether you're writing a will for the first time or revisiting an existing one, ask yourself:
- Does this reflect who and what matters most to me?
Taking this step now is one of the most loving things you can do for your family—and for your community. It’s about more than “who gets what.” It’s about peace of mind, clarity, and creating a legacy that truly lasts.
