Images that Shape Montana Contest

June 30, 2026

Contest entries open July 1 through September 18.

The Montana Community Foundation invites artists and photographers from across the state to participate in our Images that Shape Montana contest. This is an opportunity to share how you see philanthropy shaping our communities, landscapes, and future. There will be four category winners, each receiving $500. The grand-prize winner will receive $1,500 and will be featured in Montana Community Foundation publications, on social media, and at an art walk.

"Last year, Montana artists and photographers helped us tell powerful stories of generosity, resilience, and community through their work," said Montana Community Foundation President & CEO Mary Rutherford. "We were inspired by how participants captured the impact of philanthropy, showcasing the people, places, and programs that strengthen our communities. We are excited to invite artists again to share their unique perspective and help us celebrate the power of giving across our state."

Last year’s grand prize winner was Jordan Lefler for his photograph, End the Silence. Other category winners included Jessica Bower for her piece, New Pie; Andrew "AJ" Butler for his piece, Heart of Culture; Jordan Lefler for his piece, Casting for Gold; and Bulbul Majumder.

Submissions will be judged in four impact areas central to MCF’s mission:

  • Education, Equity, & Culture - Artwork that reflects how philanthropy supports inclusive access to education and equitable opportunities that empower all Montanans to succeed.
  • Community & Economic Vitality – Art that showcases how giving supports resilient communities, growth, and community development.
  • Land & Resiliency - Visual stories of conservation, stewardship, sustainability, or how communities address challenges of an evolving environment.
  • Health & Well-being - Representations of how philanthropy enhances the physical, mental, and social health of Montanans.

The contest is open to Montana-based artists and photographers of all levels, ages 16 and up. Parental consent form will be required for minors. All submissions will be featured across Montana Community Foundation’s communication channels, and the grand prize winner will be the featured artist of Montana Community Foundation’s 2026 Impact Report.

Acceptable mediums include photography, digital art, illustration, painting, and mixed media. The contest opens July 1, the submission deadline is September 18, and winners will be announced on October 16.
